Mechanical Commercial thinning will start on a 45-year-old stand. This was planted back in the late 1970’s. This is a system that will target the smaller trees and leave the larger and healthier trees to reach maturity.
Winter season 2021-2022
2020-2021
Harvesting in 2020 and 2021 season included the Pack Saddle, Dave Henry, East Canoe, West Canoe, Swift Creek, and West Ridge areas. VCF limits the winter harvesting in the Dave Henry and West Canoe to end in mid-December, due to high avalanche activity in these areas. Local Avalanche Technician Peter Amann was hired to provide training, monitor the high avalanche hazard conditions, and update the Avalanche Safety Plan.
General
Forest harvesting involves cutting trees and delivering them to sawmills, pulp mills, and other wood-processing plants. Years of planning go into deciding when and which parts of the forest will be harvested and how this will occur. The specifics of harvesting depend on the Biogeoclimatic Zone and other detailed factors.
General methods of harvesting used by the VCF are conventional and cable operations.
